Perfect Pitch

Jul 29 '00

Ear training is a subject that most musicians dread. But in truth, perfect pitch can be learned!

The process is quite simple. There are only a couple of things that you
need to do.

First, carry a tuning fork with you everywhere you go. Whenever you feel like it, ring it and listen to the sound intensely. Tambour, pitch, volume, etc. After it stops ringing, think about the sound that you just heard, and what note it was. Play the sound in your head, and then ring the fork one more time. Keep doing it until you can hear the sound correctly in your head every time before ringing the fork.

Once you can sing (or play on your instrument) that note every time you think of it by sound, (not by name) start learning what different intervals sound like. Then repeat the process with those notes. It goes a lot quicker than you would think!

Next, a fun little exercise. Get with a friend who also plays an instrument, and have him or her play a note and see if you can hit the same note on your instrument on your first try. To make it simple, stay in one key. After you get good at that, then try two notes. Or a different key. Once you have gotten bored with that, you can exercise on intervals, by having your friend always start on the same note, and then playing a phrase or a neat lick in that key. Again, see if you can copy it on your first try. It is pretty fun!

By writing this procedure, I don't mean to say that it will work for everyone or that it will happen overnight, but by doing these things, your ear should improve if you have the determination to keep at it!

I hope that this helps some of you out there!
