Ear training-Even Percussionist can get in on this...

Nov 26 '00

As a percussionist, people often think it is weird or unusual that I would like to learn about music. Most people think of percussionists as the people in the back hitting tings really, really hard. Well....I'll admit, that is fun....but no. My main percussion instrument is timpani. Ear training to me is very important. I come from a family full of musicians, so there is that musical gene...I guess? Most people have trouble pulling out pitches from the band for tuning timpani. I don't. But I like to train. Hear....I mean here is my advice on ear training:
1) Buy a tuning fork. They cost about 6 dollars and they look kind of like a "Y" shape. Make sure it is in the tune of A 440.
2) Have a instrument that is tuned. Have somebody else play it. Pianos work best for this.
3) Have the person play a note. Tap the tuning fork on your leg, listen to it, then sing up to the note. Tell what the interval is, and what note it is. Example:
The person plays a C. You don't know what note it is. They only play it once.
You tap the tuning fork on you leg. You hear an A. You sing up to the new note. You think, "Ok....that's a 3rd. A 3rd up from A is C."
You say, "That's a 3rd. It is a C."
4) Ok, now you have that down....lets try something else. Doing the same thing as above, have the person play two notes at the same time. Say they play C and F. Tell them first what is the interval. You tell them it is a 4th. Good. Now what are the notes? Repeat this with more notes(3 notes, 4 notes - pick out the intervals and what notes are being played.)

Now that you know how to pick out notes, you will be better at singing, tuning timpani(if your a percussionist...or maybe not), picking out notes, and writing music. Do this over and over. I never stop. If you don't have somebody to play the instrument for you, get a keyboard or piano and turn around backwards and play it then figure out the notes. Good luck!
