Put the Music Out There.
Dec 28 '00
I have been playing professionally for 27 years now. I have played and jammed and performed with many of the biggest names in the world of jazz, rock , and yes...even show biz. My motive has always been my deep love of music and my personal need to express it. However if you had ever saw many of the people and groups I played in it would have been hard for me to prove that statement to you. Egos, booze, chicks, easy money, laziness... these are the reasons that most musicians I've known over the years play in bands. In 2001 employment in clubs is almost down to non-existent. This is due to strict D.U.I. laws, corporate dis-ownership of musicians in hotels, and in general to an anti-musical mentality which is held by the recording industry which has always catered to the lowest common denominator in people.
So... my point is this: if you love music and you want to share your love and your talent with other folks then do it! Find musicians with a common mind-set and play. You do not all have to be at the same level musically. Someone will always be better or worse than someone else in the group. Change is the only constant in life so when people leave, the group breaks up; don't fight it , evolve with it. Also, you don't need to get paid to say that you are a pro. Volunteer! Play at an old folks home, at a park, at a fund-raiser. If you work hard, sound good, then your name will get around and people will request your group. Good luck and get the music out to the people.
