For Fun Or For Business

Dec 12 '00

The most important realization a band leader can make when starting a band is to decide whether it is for fun or for business. If you do not determine this from the start you may completely miss the point, and possibly lose good friends in the process. If its for fun lighten up and enjoy the moment....it is fun! If it's serious business then don't waste time....get busy.

The band that has serious recording and touring aspirations must be very disciplined. That means you must know your intended audience and create a set of steps to achieve your goals. It starts with finding the "right" musicians to bring your band success, not necessarily the "best" musician or your best friends. Most "garage" bands never leave the driveway because they do not really know where they want to go or how much time they are willing to spend in the process.

When the band has been selected you must be disciplined in practice. An average musician who attends every practice is better than a "hotshot" who feels he doesn't need it! Elect one person, who has the respect and confidence of all of the members to be the final decision-maker. Much time can be wasted arguing over petty issues.

The best perspective for a band to have is to look at your band objectively from the listeners perspective, not trapped inside your own little world. I can assure you that a record producer will take notice if you handle yourselves like professionals not like a "garage" band. Go right after your intended audience don't wait to "be discovered." Bands that get signed make themselves noticed.

Life is too short to flounder in indecision. You could end up like many of my musician friends who are in their thirties and still playing "rock star." Decide what it is that you want from your band and how much time you are willing to spend at it - and then go get it.
