brute force composition
Oct 02 '00
I am a student of music theory and when I have the composer's equivalent of writer's block, I find it helpful to write SOMETHING. Anything I write will get me started, even without a chord structure in mind. Even if I just write the chromatic scale, from there I can eliminate notes until I have a coherant line. Random notes in a pretty design on the staff may provide the foundation of a hit song. Another thing I find helpful is to try out my rhythmic mistakes. If I write the rhythm of a song incorrectly, I play it to see what it sounds like anyway. My mistake may be better than what I had in mind.
A songwriter dosn't have to wait for inspiration, devine intervention or an engraved invitation. You can make your own inspiration through what I call brute force composition. I chip away at each melody and harmony until it has smooth curves and sharp edges, just the way I like it.
