ADHD There is help

Just Yesterday we had our 5 year old son tested for ADHD. I have to admit that it was a scary day for us. We always had it in the back of are minds that there was some sort of problem with are son.

To make it a little harder on us,we adopted our son when he was 1 month old and didn't have a lot of information on the birth family. After a lot of trying to pull any and all information from the agency that we adopted are son we got some of the answers we needed to proceed to get the answers to are questions about the Birth parents.

Come to find out both, birth Mother and Dad had delayed speech and some mild learning problems. So one thing I think is very important is to keep on the agency if you have a adopted Son or Daughter for all the information you can get on the birth parents.

Anyway back to yesterday. We went to a team of specialists to have him tested for ADHD.I personally feel that is the way to go and do it.I can't belive you can go to a Pediatrician and have them tell you in a 10 min. appointment that your child has ADHD.

The total process took over 4 hours for all the testing and results. While they were testing our son, my wife and I were also asked a list of questions as to what we see happening with our son and what are goals are for him.

When it was all said and done they said he had ADHD. My first thought was I really didn't want to medicate my 5 year old. But after a 1 hour meeting with the staff. They suggested to do a trail period for 4 weeks and see if there is any change.During that time medication would be adjusted over the next 4 weeks to see if we could find a dose of medication that would help him..

My son is a very bright child, he just can't sit still and focus and stay on task for any projects for any length of time. Next year he will be starting Kindergarten and we really don't want him to fall behind.

Over the last 5 years I have gotten pretty used to my son going a 120 mph all the time. But my wife and I decided that we need to try the medication. Because by the time school starts he needs to be able to focus and stay on task.

If my wife and I and his preschool see an improvement with our son on medication we will continue it.

As a parent we can not let are hang ups about medication keep our children from succeeding in school.

So please if you have a child that you think my be ADHD or any other disability PLEASE have them tested. It is better to get on top of the problem before school, instead of during school and cause them to get behind or be teased by classmates.

So give it a try your child's future depends on YOU as parents to make the right choices for them.

Also I think if I had to do it over again I would not tell any family members that you are having your child tested. We did and I wished we wouldn't have.It is funny they all think our son is a little wild but when we told them we were getting him tested, just about everybody had a cow.

These are choices that you as the parent have to make. You are the one that see what your child is doing everyday. You also are the one that has to make the choices not other family members.

I know I keep repeating my self about the Choices but I can not say enough about how important it is that the choices are made By the PARENT!!
