The Pill, RU 486 and the Gift of LifeSep 30 '00 (Updated Oct 14 '00) Write an essay on this topic.I was ignorant as to what exactly the difference between these two pills were and was very surprised to find out the facts. This is a very important issue, especially in America today. I would like to share with you what I learned. No matter where you stand on these issues, I think you will enjoy this information. The best description I found of “the pill” was at Planned Parenthood Federation of America’s web-site. This is probably because Planned Parenthood focuses on “birth-control.” It is as follows: “‘The Pill’ is the common name for oral contraception. There are two basic types—combination pills and progestin-only pills. Both are made of hormones like those made by a woman's ovaries—estrogen and progestin. Combination pills contain both hormones. Progestin-only pills contain only progestin. Both kinds of pills require a medical evaluation and prescription. Both kinds of pills are intended to prevent pregnancy. But they work differently. Combination pills usually work by preventing a woman's ovaries from releasing eggs (ovulation). Progestin-only pills also can prevent ovulation. But they usually work by thickening the cervical mucus. This keeps sperm from joining with an egg. Combination pills also thicken cervical mucus. Both types of pill may also prevent fertilized eggs from implanting in the uterus (womb).” This means that the egg and sperm never unite. A life never begins. I found the best description of RU-486 at the National Right to Life Committee’s web-site. This is probably because they are also concerned about the effects different “birth control” has on a “fetus.” This description of RU-486 is as follows (if you want more information, please go to: http://www.nrlc.org/abortion/ASMF/asmf6.html) ”While many people focus solely on RU 486, the so-called ‘French abortion pill,’ the RU 486 technique actually uses two powerful synthetic hormones with the generic names of mifepristone and misoprostol to chemically induce abortions in women five-to-nine weeks pregnant. The RU 486 procedure requires at least three trips to the abortion facility. In the first visit, the woman is given a physical exam, and if she has no obvious contra-indications (‘red flags’ such as smoking, asthma, high blood pressure, obesity, etc., that could make the drug deadly to her), she swallows the RU 486 pills. RU 486 blocks the action of progesterone, the natural hormone vital to maintaining the rich nutrient lining of the uterus. The developing baby starves as the nutrient lining disintegrates.” Unlike "the pill", a life does begin and that baby is starved to death. Is this an improvement from being ripped apart limb by limb with no pain killer? It is amazing to me that these are people that consider themselves “pro-choice.” I need to remind myself that what they mean is “their-choice.” I can not imagine that would be the baby’s choice. My father wanted me aborted (obviously he lost that argument). You can read more about my life in a few of my other reviews. It was no walk in the park, but I am very grateful to my mom for my life. I felt the risks of RU 486 are important to be aware of. The baby, obvious the risk is a guaranteed death. According to Fox News in an article printed October 13, 2000, the risks of the mother are significant: On Aug. 23, more than a month before RU-486 was approved by the Food and Drug Administration, the company sent out a strongly worded letter, with the cooperation of the FDA, saying misoprostol "is not approved for the induction of labor or abortion." The letter said misuse of the drug can cause adverse effects such as a ruptured uterus, vaginal bleeding and "maternal or fetal death." If this quote seems confusing, it is because misoprostol was intended to treat ulcers. The manufacturers strongly oppose its use for abortion because of the strong safety risk. Well, it is now legal to use this pill between 5 and 9 weeks of pregnancy. Just to get a true perspective of what these means, I researched the development of a child in the womb up to 9 weeks (mind you this is a much earlier deadline that abortion). I was very surprised to find how amazingly developed that seemingly disposable child was. The best description I could find is from the wonderful Good Housekeeping magazine from the UK called “Having A Baby From Pregnancy to Potty Training”, the June/July 2000 issue starting on page 87: First trimester: 3 WEEKS: Pregnancy is dated from the first day of your last period, so the third week is the official conception. The egg is fertilized by a sperm as it waits in the Fallopian tube, then slowly journeys to the uterus. Although there’s just a group of cells, smaller than a pinhead, the baby’s sex and genetic blueprint are set. 4 WEEKS: It is too early for you to notice any changes in your body, although you may feel tired and premenstrual. Your fertilized egg, or blastocyst, has embedded itself safely in your uterine lining, which has been thickening in preparation. From this point. The blastocyst is called an embryo. The first nerve cells have already formed. 5 WEEKS: Your period is late, although you may feel it is about to start at any minute. The embryo is 2mm long. It is developing three different layers of cells, which will form the skeleton, the internal organs and nervous system, and the skin and hair. The embryo is more deeply embedded in the uterus, and the protective amniotic sac has formed around it. The spine is developing. 6 WEEKS: A sensitive time for you and the embryo. Your pregnancy confirmed, you may be tired and moody, as your metabolism speeds up to deal with the changes. Now the size of a watermelon pip, the embryo is mainly a huge head and heart, and a spine. The heart beats, which can be seen in a scan. 7 WEEKS: The embryo resembles a tiny prawn. As the cells multiply, the head is growing into two equal hemisphere, with an eye and nostril on each. A rudimentary digestive system is starting to form, and arms and hands grow from two of four limb buds. Your nipples might be starting to feel sensitive. 8 WEEKS: The embryo is about 2.5cm (1in) long, and you can get cramps as your uterus expands. As your body becomes flooded with hormones, you may start food cravings. Hormones lower your blood pressure which can cause dizzy spells. The embryo now has a face, its arms and legs are growing forward. 9 WEEKS: The embryo’s arms and legs are growing and it has hands, flexed at the wrist. The head is becoming erect as the neck develops. The liver has started to produce blood and some blood vessels are forming the umbilical cord, which will remove waste from the embryo. Your baby will start to move, but you won’t feel this yet. I find this process the most amazing thing. It is so beautiful. That was the week many will die. So will these 9 week olds have a soul? Does the soul pop in when a baby is born, even if when born prematurely? Does it pop in at the exact moment a woman undergoes a cesarean? Does it exist in a miscarriage? Many do not like to think there is a soul at 9 weeks. I personally would think it would be more dumbfounding if there is not. I hope you found this description of the first few weeks of pregnancy as beautiful as I did and found this review food for thought. God Bless. Cindy |
