Facing Change and Considering it an OpportunityJun 20 '00 Write an essay on this topic.Several months ago, I lost my job. Officially, my job was eliminated. I became one of many who were no longer needed, due to downsizing. The all famous motto of "Doing more with less" hit me right in the face. I had been at my present employer for the past fourteen years. Needless to say, I was devastated. What do I do now? Why me? Didn't I do a good enough job? were all questions I asked myself. Being in this situation definitely hit to the core of my being. Everything I prided myself in about my work and work ethic seemed trivial to the people I had been so loyal to. I had to step back and take a hard and fast look at what was truly important to me, as far as my work goes. In my particular situation, my job was eliminated and an inexperienced, younger and without a degree individual replaced me. The individual was actually hired to manage seven units!!!! I managed one! Our hospital was the product of E.C. Murphy. A firm hired to find the right people to do the right job and eliminate inefficiencies in the workplace. I believed in the concept and felt that if someone could help us to find a way to do things better, Great!!! Anyway, the long and the short of it is, after evaluating and reevaluating what I wanted to do and where I wanted to be, I decided I could make this the worst situation of my life or I could make it the best. I decided to take another job with the same hospital. (Not a bad deal as my wage was frozen, but I could now clock in and out and go home without out all the responsibility I formerly had!) I was actually excited about the prospect of doing something new and different. All that really mattered to me was taking care of patients. Needless to say, I am very happy and still love going to work everyday. Change can be hard on hope. problems which are the natural offspring of change often block our field of view and cloud our ability to see the "forest through the trees." It is easy to focus on what is going wrong instead of searching out the possibilities and opportunities. Trouble naturally draws attention. The key is to focus on the possibilities and find something positive for you personally. Negavtivity breeds negativity. Too much time and attention and personal energy is wasted paying attention to the negative. Believing in the problems destroys our faith in the opportunities. We get discouraged and lose faith. I decided to attack the problem with a can do attitude and I believe I came out the winner. Remember opportunity often comes disguised as trouble. The way you think, the way you frame a situation heavily influences your ability to deal with the tough issues. Look beyond and make things happen for yourself! You can do it. The opportunities can be endless the limits just as endless if you choose to make it that way. "The perception of the problem is always relative." A thought I consider to be true. I cannot give credit to who quoted that as I don't remember even where it came from. Ironic and true though. Walk away from the chance for change or welcome it and see what new challenges await you!! |
