It's A GIRL!Apr 19 '00 Write an essay on this topic. My third child Becca is a real cutie (I swear this is the opinion of at least half the state of PA). She is a 15 month old ham. Everywhere she goes she steals the show and a few hearts along the way. The blue or pink discussion fits in here because of the number of Becca's fans who think she is the most darling boy they have ever seen. This happens even when she is clearly dressed in girl's clothing. Being frugally minded, Becca is occasionally dressed in brother's unisex handme downs. When she is dressed in nongender specific colors, she is almost always assumed to be a boy. Does this bother me? Yes I have to admit that it does. Does it influence the way I dress her? Yes, it does to an extent. While I am all for raising children in a less gender specific way, I certainly don't wish for their gender to be mistaken. I imagine lots of parents go the pink or blue clothing route with younger children just to avoid gender questioning. That is my only motive. It doesn't solve the problem but does alleviate it quite a bit. When Becca starts to have a preference, she will be allowed to choose as does her older sister. There are a lot of rules in this world that children must follow for the sake of safety and order. I don't believe in making up extra rules. Where there can be freedom to choose, let them. Let them be the unique individuals they were born to be. Becca is an active energetic toddler who keeps busy exploring and relocating anything she can find. She is free to choose from both her brother's and sister's toys which is quite the variety but rarely plays with toys at all. She couldn't care less what color she is dressed in. Btw, we do dress her in blue alot at home. Other than her identifiable girl clothes to go to town in (rarely if ever prissy), she is largely free to chose her own likes and dislikes. She is unique and we want her to stay that way. Obviously, we don't know yet if she is going to break stereotypes, break hearts or both. Be WARNED! if you come to PA., do guard your heart. Becca has a large collection but she is always looking for just one more .............. But don't worry too much. She always returns them full of laughter and love...Becca style. |
