Personal is better than store-bought!

A party that your child helps plan with you will last in their memories for a long long time. If your child is into rockets instead of a cookie-cutter character, you can do much with what you have. These parties are often cheaper, but even better, they are different than any they have been to before because they are personal.
If, for example, it was rockets that your child loved, you could make construction paper rocket invitations. Or, you could have your child draw one and then take it to a color copy place so you don't have to attempt drawing it. Leave an area blank so the specifics can be written.
You can make a rocket cake by making a regular 13x9 cake and then putting tissue covered toilet roll & a cone of paper on top of the cake (to resemble a rocket). If you feel this is too much, almost anything can be drawn on a cake if you break it down. Rockets are a rectangle and cone shape. You can add things that go with your theme around the edge or in the background. For a rocket, you would only need flames. Then just buy letters for "happy birthday" or draw them in if you are ambitious.
Then theme the decorations around rockets and space: Pin the flame on the rocket, Hot "rocket" (potato), and maybe a pinata shaped like a rocket or planet. You can make paper mache (for the pinata)into most shapes using cardboard or a balloon. You can search the internet for papermache recipes. The goodie bags can contain space/rocket related items.
These parties are most fun for the child because of the participation in the planning and execution. I have done these parties with a pirate theme, Princess, & clown. Ask your child, then brainstorm the ideas for every aspect from card, cake, games, goodies & decorations. You can do it and its great fun. Don't forget to take pictures!
