So, you had your baby shower and you are now the owner of 5 different baby carriers. Return them all and buy a Baby Bjorn! As every new parent knows, carrying and snuggling your baby makes them cry less. In our case, a LOT less. I wore my baby almost constantly until she was about 6 months old. The first three months I did it for her, and the second three months I did it for me! I got spoiled by being able to do practically anything while wearing her in the Bjorn. She was content and happy almost all the time. I loved that it kept strangers from touching her when I was out in public, too (I hate that!)
The Bjorn is so easy to use, and it was much more comfortable for me than other carriers, which caused back pain once she was larger than about 10 lbs. The wide straps really distribute the load well, and the long leg holes gave my baby room to move comfortably. With most carriers you have to get the baby’s legs into holes (a nightmare) but with the Bjorn you just have to get the strap between their legs and buckle them in. I used the Bjorn mostly in the winter, and I loved that I could leave the straps on but remove the baby. I’d wear the straps under my jacket, so I could get her out of the car seat and into the Bjorn in about 20 seconds flat. No hassle! I hated having my mobility limited by using the stroller (unfortunately, most public places are unfriendly to people on wheels). I used the Bjorn almost exclusively unless I had a large shopping trip planned, in which case the stroller became a big shopping cart and she still rode in the Bjorn! I loved feeling so close to my baby—as a new mom, I just didn’t like having her so far away from me in the stroller. I felt that she really enjoyed seeing things from my perspective, up high, once she was old enough to face outward at 3 months. I kept a pocket mirror handy, so I could see her expressions and check for spitup! When I could tell she was tired, I’d simply turn her toward my chest and she’d go to sleep immediately. The Bjorn gave me freedom and confidence to go out and do what I wanted or needed to do, and I never had to worry about her “melting down” in public. I know that’s a lot to attribute to a baby carrier, but it’s true! I am a huge proponent of “babywearing,” and I think it has helped shape my baby’s mellow personality. She loves to ride in the sling now that she is too big for the Bjorn. While I like the sling’s convenience, it is not as versatile as the Bjorn. I know a lot of people who say they can do “everything” with a baby in a sling, but I always feel a bit lopsided and limited in my mobility. It’s a great tool, but I love the Bjorn and can’t wait to use it with my next baby!
I will say that I just couldn’t get my husband to use the Bjorn, and he just refused to figure it out. He simply preferred to carry her, which was fine for the first ½ hour but eventually she’d always end up with me in the Bjorn. The few times he did use it, he found it comfortable once I got it adjusted for him. He never did learn to put it on by himself, even though it was so easy.
The ads say that the Bjorn can be used up to 33 lbs. and 9 months, but I did not find that to be true. Around 20 lbs., the carrier became tight around her chest, and it became more awkward to use. It could still be used for quick trips, but it is just not as useful after about 6 months/20 lbs. Still, it was worth every penny and tops my short list of “Must Haves” for baby!
