I wish my Mom would send me the things that these kids got!Oct 24 '00 Write an essay on this topic.Candy, extra socks and underwear, teen mags, silly string and squirt guns. Just the things I wanted! I'm a professional camp person. During the summers, I'm a lifeguard/counselor/director for various girls camps in Rhode Island. And I can't begin to tell you the gifts I've seen kids get over the years. Care Packages can make or break a kid's stay at camp. Those cookies mom baked for her extra special often have one of two reactions. One, being the girl is overjoyed, loves it, and shares with all the folks. She sends a huge thank you letter home to mom and dad. Two, being for the homesick child, and one sniff of those cookies send her over the edge of her "I want my Mom!" tyrades. But overall, I'm all for care packages. I often send packages to friends I have working at other camps in the state. ***A few tips for the carepackage newbies.*** Send several small packages. Even though this might cost more in postage, I've learned that 4 small packages has a longer-lasting effect on a camper than one huge package the day before the child goes home. Send something other than food! Trust me, I feed my campers well. Sometimes the last thing I need is Suzie all hyped up on pixie sticks and M&M's. Yeah, I know...the kids love it. Send some candy...just not 8 pounds of it. Be origional with it too. Candy necklaces go over better than a bag of Skittles. Send pictures of the family if your child is not the homesick type. This is touchy. Sometimes its a great way for the camper to tell her mates about her life back home. Sometimes one look at Whiskers the cat will put her in tears. Be creative! Squirt guns, chinese yo-yo, temp tattoos, playing cards, fake eyelashes, silly socks and underwear, silly nailpolish colors, stickers, all of these things have been send to my girls, and they were a hit! I've taken a cue from many parents in sending my co-workers packages after a few had said, "Oh, Cool! I want a kazoo!" Happy Camping!  |
