My degree....M.O.M.

When others were thinking about college 25 years ago, I couldn't think of anything but becoming a mom. Although I was 28 before it finally happened, I just couldn't wait to become a mother. I liked it so much, I not only enrolled for a degree but continued for a master's with my second one and then decided to go for the doctorate with my third!!

Being a M.O.M. is one of the most fulfilling occupations one can pursue. Of course, you have to be willing to put in long hours and work alot of overtime. Sometimes you find yourself challenged beyond anything you can imagine and at other times you will be sitting around looking for something to do. The pay is not particularly good, but I must admit the perks can be outstanding.

I think it is important to note that you must begin negotiations with your staff immediately or risk the chance of being overtaken by a union. You must have policies and procedures and its best if you can get some peer support and have a grapevine working for you. I made a point to conduct staff meetings regularly although developing a team concept was not something well thought of in 1980!! However, working out a compromise with management and staff was possible most of the time.

As I became more experienced in my position, I was able to slowly shift responsibility to my staff. I became a manager and allowed them to take on additional tasks and they became accountable for the actions taken. This took more time than I initially thought, but we both learned along the way. I am happy to say that all three are now fully functional and working independently. In fact, my oldest is now working on her M.O.M. and as a member of the Board of Directors, I am hoping to provide some direction but happily not have to be involved in the day to day operations.

If you are considering an M.O.M., you must be willing to work hard, put in long hours and the pay is sometimes not very good. But, the perks and benefits are more than you will bargain for and its a wonderful career!!
