A tough task for parent and child
Apr 02 '00
Potty training your child is a huge commitment and takes a lot of work. I think the thing to remember is that you have a child that has been using a diaper for 2 years (maybe more maybe less just picking a number) and now you are trying to get them to change their behavior and use the potty. This is difficult for them, patience is the key...for both of you!
It took me quite some time to be ready to potty train my child, those diapers were so much more convenient when we were out and about, I didn't want to visit every restroom in town. So, after my second daughter was born and I was more housebound with a newborn in the middle of winter, I decided it was time. After all she was 2 1/2 and she was ready!
A friend of mine suggested NOT using the Pull-up type underwear as they were just like diapers...they pull the wetness away from the skin and therefore are the same feeling as the diapers. Get the big think underwear they told me. This made so much sense to me. So, out to the store my daughter and I went. I picked out some of the training underwear and home we went to begin the task!
It was a lot of hard work and there were ALOT of accidents and ALOT of puddles on the floor. I think next time I will definitely try the little plastic pants that go over the underwear, LOL! There were so many times that I wanted to get mad, I knew that she was able to go in the potty, I knew she knew she had to go so why was she waiting? But, I didn't get mad, I stayed calm and everytime she wet, she took her wet clothes off and put new clothes on.
We had a small set back where she wouldn't wear the underwear without a fight, so we went to the store and I let HER pick out her underwear. We got Sleeping Beauty, Barbie, Blues Clues...you get the idea, and never had a diaper again. There were still accidents, heck we still have them sometimes and it has been a year. But, we stayed patient and we were both involved in this. She loved being able to pick out her own underwear every day and if she made it the whole day without an accident she got a sticker (I know you might think bribery is bad, but remember you are trying to change a habit they have had for 2 or more years!)
Remember patience is the key!
