Falltime Fun !!!Oct 18 '00 Write an essay on this topic.I think my Epinions are developing a theme this month, my favorite of all months of the year. This isn't just my favorite month just because of the holiday it ends with. I love autumn as a whole. I feel like a new person in this season of all seasons. I think the only reason I stay in Cleveland is because of the wonderful fall foliage and that sweet crisp autumn air that just cannot be found elsewhere. How does your family enjoy this much too short season? Jumping in leaves is a favorite activity for just about all children but it also seems so "generic". There is so much more to learn about, see and do during autumn! The LEAVES!! Fall is great time for kids to learn about nature. A trip through the park can teach them more now than at any time of the year. They can pick up the leaves on the ground, see them, feel them and in some cases taste them. A great game activity if you have several children is to see who can find the largest amount of different types of leaves. A book from the library can help to identify what type of leaves they are and to learn more about the trees they came from. I love pressing them afterwards and using them in craft and home decorating projects. Animal Activities It's also a great time to learn about hibernation and migration. In most parks in this area you are bound to see a squirrel or two gathering acorns, tiny nuts, and berries for his long sleep during the coming winter months. The birds are all heading south, gracing the skies with their presence. A great book for elementary school aged students is Fall Bustle which talks all about animals, how busy they are during this month, and just why they are so busy. Farming October is a great time to learn about harvesting and the original reasons for it. Farmers lived off their land and had to bring in all of the food to save it and eat it over the winter months. Much like the squirrel we just saw in the park. Many food items have come to be associated with this time of year because they ripen. Apples, pumpkins, squash, corn, and gourds are part of almost every fall time festival for this reason. Get your child a perfectly ripe gourd and set it on a shelf undisturbed until spring. Chances are they will have a wonderful maraca when you take it down. The vegetable inside dries out leaving only the seeds to rattle around inside! My daughter loves this and does it every year! Great Eats and Treats! We make sure to try and enjoy all of the wonderful food items that this season gives us. We are fortunate enough to live in an area that has many fall festivals that allow us to sample many of the old world treats. Apple cider and apple butter are among our favorites but we wouldn't pass up some good ole fashioned pumpkin pie or carmel apple!! We are also close to a highly populated Amish area and love visiting there during this time of year (Amish cheeses are wonderful!). There are some great autumn recipes on www.family.com ! Other things to point out... •Evergreens don't lose their foliage and that's probably why we use them as Christmas trees. •Mums bloom at this time of the year and blend with all of the other fall colors. •The Pilgrims and what it was like when they settled in America. •Johnny Appleseed, what he did and how "important" he was. This is also a great time to learn about fables and how we don't know (really) how much truth they hold. A few of the things we love to do ... Craft projects (www.family.com for some great ones!) Hay rides and mazes Pumpkin Carving & Apple picking Horse Rides Rail splitting Face Painting If you are in or near Ohio this fall don't miss ... Mapleside Farms 294 Pearl Road, Brunswick OH 330-225-5577 Always open. Apples, bakery, wagon rides, kid's activities, pumpkins, carmel apples, cider, cornstalks and a 40 mile view of great fall foliage. |
