It is your choice

I believe that babies should be nursed. The Lord made a woman’s body to naturally produce milk after childbirth, so why not at least give it a chance.

My Story:
My son was a really lazy eater the first few weeks of his life. He was not getting enough to eat, so our primary concern was to get the milk in him, breast or bottle. We went to a Lactation Consultant and after the first visit she had us try tube feeding. The tube feeding worked for about a feeding and a half. The next day when we went back and she gave us a Haberman bottle. This bottle worked great.

I tried nursing for the first week and half, but it did not work for me. It was too painful and stressful. Within the first day I had developed bad sores and within in the first week I had developed a breast infection with a fever of 103/104 degrees F. Each feeding turned out to be very stressful and it was not any fun. I wanted to enjoy feeding my son.

I made the decision…I was going to pump and bottle-feed my son the expressed milk. This must have been the hardest thing for me to do, I felt as if I was depriving my son. I kept telling my self “he is still getting breast milk”. After each feeding I would pump, even in the middle of the night. I am not going to kid anyone, this takes a lot of work and determination on your part, but I was determined to have my son on breast milk.

I continued pumping up until he was five months and I then switched him to formula. I think it was harder for me than it was for him.

I cannot tell you what to do, but do make an informed decision. Read up on breastfeeding and all the benefits that come from it for both you and your child. Most importantly, let it be your decision, after all it is your body. Breastfeeding is a personal decision that can only be made by the mother. What is right for one person might not be right for another.

The internet is a wealth of information and support for breastfeeding moms or for those that just want information on it. Here are a couple of good sites on breastfeeding:
