Care Packages That Scream "I Care"

Camp! Ahhh, the memories..........

I loved to go to camp when I was a kid and I cannot wait until my children can experience the joy of camp. Whether is is short term camp(3-4 days) or long term camp( 1 or more weeks) all kids like to get mail and/or packages. My Mom was the ultimate Care Package sender. I would get a Care Package every day I was at camp and each time there were surprises galore and yummy treats. Here are a few ideas to make your child's Care Packages scream, "I really do care!".

1)Food: Nothing says lovin' like fresh baked cookies. I know they aren't the healthiest treat and they do produce a sugar rush, but sitting on a bunk bed in your cabin surrounded by drooling friends *is* camp. Not only will you make your child an instant star, but the aroma will make the crabbiest counselor smile. I also recommend packing some munchie snacks like pretzels and tortilla chips. Stay away from cheese curls and other orange dusted snacks as they will simply end up coating your child's bedding.

2)Money: If the camp has a canteen or store make sure you send some hard cold cash. Money gets spent quickly and there is nothing worse than having 2 days left at camp and no money to spend. It was always a special treat to go to the canteen after the evening bonfire and grab a cold A-Treat soda and a Slim Jim. Ahhh, the simple joys of childhood.

3)Puzzle Books: Word searches, crossword puzzles and Mad Libs will keep your child and many friend entertained on rainy days and long nights in the cabin or tent. I remember giggling as we made up silly Mad Libs and tried to solve crossword puzzles by flashlight. They are wonderful memories.

4)Local Newspaper or Clippings: If your town or city has a weekly or daily paper clip articles out that may interest your child. Send the comics of there is nothing that would make them smile or excite them to read. It is always nice to get news from home. Maybe the local sports team had an awesome victory or a friend made the headlines and your child will feel involved and less homesick.

5)Small Toys: The following are good choices to send to camp because they are small and can be played alone or with others. Yo-yos, small travel size board games, pick up sticks, jacks, jump rope, small squirt guns(if allowed at the camp), deck of cards or card games like Old Maid and Bubbles(even older kids get a kick out of trying to blow cool shapes out of bubbles).

6)Paper and Writing Instrument: Cool stationery and a great new pen or pencil will encourage your child to write home. I think the new gel pens and gel pen paper would be a big hit and fun to send and receive. I also recommend sending addressed envelopes made out to grandparents, relatives, friends and a few to yourself. My Mom would always make up address labels for me to place on postcards and envelopes. Also pack enough stamps so that precious allowance isn't spent at the post office.

I hope these recommendations and suggestions help to make your Care Packages a big success. I know they helped to make my 10 years of camp experience unforgettable and I knew my parents really put Care into the Care Packages.
