Morning, noon, and night sickness!

During my first pregnancy I was S-I-C-K! I am talking nausea and vomiting for the better part of four months! They may call it morning sickness, but for me it was a constant sickness no matter what the clock said!! I was given fluids at the hospital more than once since I couldn't keep anything down. My poor husband was "forbidden" to cook in or bring smelly foods into our home. It was bad, but here are a few tips as to what made it a little more bearable (and during my second pregnancy did lots to alleviate it completely).

1. Ginger...ginger snaps, ginger tea, ground ginger sprinkled on peanut
butter and toast... whatever sounds good to you, do it!

2. Mint gum chewed as soon as I began to feel the slightest twinge.

3. Wearing Sea Bands (available at your local pharmacy or drugstore.
They are little elastic bands you wear around your wrist that push on
pressure points and help ease the nauseous feeling.

4. Lemon. The smell helped tremendously to calm my stomach.

5. The scent of grass. I was hit hardest with morning sickness during
the late fall and winter. To find the scent of fresh cut grass I got
a grass scented candle, bath gel, and cologne from The Gap. These
really helped when nothing else would.

6. Never letting my stomach get completely empty. I would even snack
when I got up to use the bathroom in the middle of the night and
would keep a few crackers or pretzels on my nightstand to eat first
thing in the morning (before my feet hit the floor).

7. Going for a walk in the fresh air helped sometimes and other times
just made it worse.

8. Making sure that we were stocked with an array of bland yet strangely
appealing foods such as boiled chicken, plain mashed potatoes, plain
bagels, pretzels, and a jar of peanut butter were key for me in
providing foods I could eat QUICKLY when I could eat them.

9. The support of my husband made a lot of difference. Him respecting
my distaste for most things and not trying to force any foods on me
went a long way towards helping to stop the feelings of queasiness.
For instance, for him to even talk about certain foods would bring on
a bout of nausea, him avoiding even mentioning them was great.

and lastly...
10. Knowing that it couldn't last forever got me through some of the worst
times of all.
