"Blah"

Mar 04 '00

There are many joys of pregnancy and there are pitfalls also. For some women, morning sickness signifies to them that they are really beginning to feel the concept and the reality of pregnancy. On the other hand, others may see it as an actual "sickness" in which the thought of getting up in the morning can bring you to tears. So,what is it anyway? Why do some women have it and some women don't? What can you do to ease the symptoms? What causes it? Why is it called morning sickness? There should be some better terminology, after all pregnancy is a beautiful time. Why not call it "TURNAROUND TIME." Finally, the most important question, how do you make it stop!
Morning sickness, Early emesis, Turnaround time, whatever the terminology you wish to use, is what happens to the female body during the first trimester of pregnancy. She experiences vomiting during the first three months of pregnancy. As the baby begins to develop, a hormone called HCG is produced within the body. This hormone begins to develop as soon as the baby is conceived and continues to elevate during the first three months of pregnancy. If she has taken a urine pregnancy test, HCG is the hormone that will signify if she is pregnant or not. It is called the pregnancy hormone and is not in the body at any other time. As the level of HCG in the blood increases, symptoms such as nausea, fatigue and morning sickness will begin. The body will try to rid itself of extra HCG. After the third month, the levels of HCG decrease, thus a decrease in the frequency of morning sickness.
Some women experience morning sickness and others don't. This is related to the level of HCG in the blood. Morning sickness has also been called motion sickness. It refers to how quickly a woman gets out of bed in the A.M. If she jumps up quickly and ready to start the day eagerly, then chances are she has caused an imbalance and has startled her system, thus motion sickness or morning sickness.
There are a few approaches to ease this delicate time. The woman should take caution at how she is getting up in the morning. She should sit on the side of the bed for a moment, get her balance and stand slowly to not disrupt the balance of the body. Some women report that eating crackers after rising will help detour the sickness. Lastly, be patient. Find out what works for you during your delicate time. I like that term better. At the end of your "blah", I wish you a healthy, happy, baby!
