Out of Control.. A Worried Uncle

Dec 17 '00 (Updated Dec 21 '00)

I am not a father and I am not sure that I ever will be. I am blessed to have two nephews and a niece and another nephew on the way. I love these kids very much. I am growing more and more concerned though for my oldest nephew.

My oldest sister is a single parent of a 8 year old boy. I fear she is going to have a nervous breakdown soon. My nephew is getting more and more out of control. Every year he seems to be getting worse. At first he would just get mad and scream and cry to get his way. Then he started kicking and hitting people. My sister has tried everything from time outs to grounding to spankings. He just keeps on getting into more trouble.

This year it has gotten very bad. He is getting into trouble at school and does not listen to his teacher or respect their authority at all. My sister was called just the other week because he threw a pair of scissors at another child. This last week he was even kicked out of a Christmas program he was in because he wasn't paying attention and causing problems. It is so sad because he LOVED being in the program.

I am very worried that if this trend continues he will end up doing something that will end up having him removed from his home. If that happens it will destroy my sister. He is always saying how sorry he is when he does wrong. He just keeps doing those same things over again. I don't even like to be around him for very long anymore. He NEVER listens to me and often he will hit or kick me. Sometimes he can be VERY sweet and two seconds later he goes off. My other sister is scared to have him around her children.

I am not sure why he acts like he does. I really want to know why he never learns from his mistakes. Some people my sister talked to think it may have to do with his father leaving him. I am sure that it has hurt him a lot. I would hate to see him put on some kind of medication, but his temper is so bad. What do you do with a child who is out of control?

Temper tantrums are a normal part of every child. When it gets out of control and violent then it has gone way to far. I sure don't want to see my nephew go into some reform school. He is a good kid who has a BAD temper. I think my sister has avoided the seriousness of his problem for to long. I'm not sure what she can do about it, but she needs to do something soon.
