The Bottom Line childhood health risks are everywhere. the best thing to do is stay clean and wash up frequently!!

It’s a typical day at lunch and you’ve just got your mash potatoes, chicken patty (don’t forget the ketchup) and a Snapple. You find that perfect seat, sit down and reach for your roll to sink your teeth into it……… but wait did you wash your hands? ” Well, no but why do I need to,” is the question that comes to most peoples mind. Well let’s evaluate this question; you touched the serving spoons in line, the ketchup dispensers, and the Snapple machine which adds up to about 9 different types of bacteria plus 2 types of mold that you are about to shove into your mouth. Yum!

Still wonder why you need to wash your hands? Recently I tested 7 widely traveled places in the school, and the test showed that there where around 31 types of bacteria including staph infection and 4 types of mold when all of the subjects results where combined. The places that were tested: the doors leading into the first floor center hallway, the snack machines, the Snapple machines, pay phones, ketchup and condiment despensers, and the cafeteria restrooms. Now, you would think that the first place winner of the most bacteria would be the restrooms, but surprisingly it was the snack machines in the cafeteria with a whopping 9 different types of bacteria and including staph infection. For all you ketchup lovers, you can sleep easy because the ketchup despensers had the least amount of bacteria and mold.

As you can see from the results, there is a lot of staph infection floating around my school. For those of you that don’t know what staph infection it is an infection that can invade and attack any part of your body, from your skin, eyes and nails to the inner lining of your heart. Symptoms may vary depending on where the infection develops. Staph infections usually enter through open parts of the body such as cuts, wounds and mouths; which means when you go to eat lunch and call your mom to tell her to bring your Spanish homework, you are getting more than homework, you're getting a nasty infection to take home as well.

Now this story isn’t meant to scare you into becoming a health freak but instead to encourage you to wash your hands for at least 20 to 30 seconds with soap before and after meals, after blowing your nose and coughing; not just for yourself but for everyone else. By washing your hands you can decrease the number of bacteria flowing through your body by 23% according to the Better Homes and Garden website. So the next time you go to dive into that roll remember this article and go wash up a bit first.
