Nothing shocks me more than IDIOTS (yes I'm using that term for these parents) who decide to let their children run around the car while it's in motion. Not only is it illegal but it is so dangerous. I really didn't think that there were parents like that until I talked to my neighbor.
My neighbors were a little odd anyway and not people I would consider taking advice from as far as parenting. They had two children, the youngest being 11 months. They couldn't understand why their baby was always sick yet still let him run around in a diaper in January! When they returned from a trip to California I asked them how their son was during the road trip. Their response was he was great once we let him out of the car seat. I was totally shocked! I told them that was pretty dangerous and risky and they said it was no big deal because they drove a suburban so even if they got into an accident it wouldn't hurt anyone. I couldn't believe they were actually that naive.
My second encounter was with a mother I knew as an acquaintance that said she couldn't afford a carseat so she just used a used CARRIER! (I'm not talking about the carseat/carrier that are often included on strollers. I'm talking about carriers that come with swings and such) I was astounded. I said carriers were not meant to be a carseat unless it said that specifically. It had no seatbelt attachments to it so she just tied it down in the car in an odd manner. I couldn't believe it. Hospitals will give you carseats for FREE!! I asked her what happened to the one she received from the hospital and she said this one was better because she could take it out of the car and use it as a carrier.
I can only hope that people wise up and instead of running around buying needless things that they save up their money for a sturdy (no it's not going to be fancy) 50 dollar car seat. I can only imagine the guilt they would feel if their child died in a car accident. There's no need to take the risk!
