German shorthaired pointers

We recently acquired a German Short-haired Pointer. He is wonderful!! I didn't think that we were ready for a new dog, considering our experience in the past, but I now think that we are.

In the past we had cocker spaniels, but we found out too late that they are not very good with children. Both of the cocker spaniels bit my son in the face(they never touched my daughter and she was rougher with them). The last straw was when Bubba, did the dirty deed. I never wanted another dog again. The kids wanted a dog, my husband wanted a dog and dogs looked so cute as puppies. I almost caved, but didn't. We were talking about getting a golden retriever maybe in January the next year but haven't actually committed to it yet.

The thought of the responsibility was annoying. I didn't want to pick up dog poops, feed it, care for it, make sure that I didn't stay away too long so it could go potty, etc... I just got my youngest child off to school and wanted my independence. In turn I received a puppy that had to be trained and coddled and loved, I just didn't want to do it. It was time consuming and I didn't have a very good track record with training the other dogs. We waited for almost a year and a half until we got another dog.

As it turns out the dog, his name is Rip, turned out to be pretty good. He was easy to potty train, I could be gone all day and he was able to hold it. He is great with the kids, they pick, pull, yank, and abuse him and he takes it like a trooper. He's finally coming around to being a watch dog, he barks at strangers that come into our area(THAT is why I would ever want a dog). He has a great disposition and is patient for the most part, right now I am training him to keep a doggie treat on his nose until I tell him to get it. Rip has been fairly easy to train in respect with fetching, sit, stay and such, it takes a few times for him to listen, but he's getting pretty good.

Rip is almost one year old and a pure bred, bred specifically for hunting. The only thing that I can say that I don't like about him is that he is kinda big(larger than my coffee table) and weighs about 50+ pounds and he is hard to wash because he has a water-proof kind of hair that is resistant to shampoo--you have to scrub against the grain of the hair-shaft pretty hard to get him really clean. He also has A LOT of energy, he goes and goes(just like the energizer bunny) and doesn't stop unless to sleep. The kids can jump on his back and he keeps going, he just jumps on them then they banter back and forth. It's kind of cute to watch them, he wears out the kids and himself at the same time.

Anyway, I would recommend a German Short-haired Pointer if you are considering buying a dog and want something that will be good with the children, hunting, watch dog and almost anything else you desire. He is easy to train and has a great disposition, they likes to give lots of kisses and hugs and will love you no matter what. I wouldn't trade ours for the world.
