| caconti's Full Review: Birth Control |
Call me stodgy and old fashioned, but I still think that male birth control, in the form of condoms, is the superior mean of ensuring sexual safety. Offered with a convenient and powerful spermicide in them, condoms are an incredibly effective and relatively inexpensive way to prevent unwanted pregnancy. Up to 99% effective or more, they virtually eliminate the possibility of insemination while also repelling the exchange of sexually transmitted diseases, such as AIDS and herpes. I recently read a figure that estimated 1 in 5 people will contract at least one STD in their lives. If that number is anywhere near the truth, then it is deserving of our attention and our prevention.
Unlike some other methods of contraception, condoms require no real "prep" time Ready to be worn immediately, they lack the time restraints of chemical methods that cannot be implemented spontaneously. In our age of spur of the moment sexual encounters, this ease of usage is a huge boon to personal safety.
I do belive that "the pill" has it's place, either as a supplement to condoms or in a highly committed relationship. While it is great at preventing pregnancy, it's inability to guard against STDs make it impractical and unsafe for sex with a partner who you do not know to be completely "clean"...blood tests being the only way to be sure of this. I understand it's popularity, especially among haters of condoms and those who love it's other affects(clear skin, less menstrual cramping etc...). Perfect for those who only wish to prevent unwanted births, users must be conscious of the fact that they are as susceptible to STDs as if they were using nothing...
In the end, birth control is a shared responsibility based on the needs and beliefs of both partners. For it's effectiveness against both pregnancy and STDs, the choice that I most recommend is the condom, perhaps supplemented by chemical methods.
