Second Time Harder?

I have always wanted to breastfeed my children. It was never really a decision I had to debate in my mind. I knew that it was best, and I knew that I would try with all my heart and soul to make it work.
My first child was born in March of 1999. Being a new mom and a new breastfeeder, we had a few problems. I developed blisters in the hospital, as I did not know how to correctly get my daughter to latch on. After meeting with the hospital lactation consultant, the problem soon got better.. After coming home, it took around 2 weeks for all problems to cease and breastfeeding to become fun. The first 2 weeks for me meant extreme nipple soreness and leaking problems, but as soon as they arrived, it seemed they were gone. In the end we ended up breastfeeding for 10 happy months and I couldnt have been happier.
My second child is currently 3 weeks old. Things have been so different this time around. I was expecting breastfeeding to come so much easier this time around, instead I have meet more obstacles than I ever imagined. It began with nipple soreness again, but I knew it was coming so it didnt seem to bad. By her first week, thrush appeared. She was treated, but by the second week, she had given it to me as well.. This made my nipple even more sore. To add to the problem, I also got mastitis on the same side as the thrush. Mastitis is the worst problem I have ever dealt with. It gave me a fever of 103, flu symptoms and a very sore breast. If I could have quit, I would have..
It has now been three weeks and the problems are all getting better. The thrush is almost gone, finally!! The mastitis is gone, as I finally finished antibiotics. I am glad I have stuck with it, but I would have never guessed that the second time around would have been so so much harder.
I would recommend breastfeeding to ANYONE!! It is such a great experience, even with all the problems. In the end you are so happy that you stuck with it and made it through the problems..
