Are we employers or a Family

My children and I had this discussion just the other day about how much was I going to pay them for cleaning up their room and taking their dishes to the sink and so forth. So I turned the tables on them, I said what were they going to pay me for cooking them dinner, Keeping the clothes washed (their ages are 5 and 7) and keeping the bills paid so that we have electricity for them to see to read and do all they enjoy. I feel that it is training them in showing responsibility, for them to pick up their dirty room and putting their clothes up from the dryer and such. Now I also told them that I would be glad to pay them an allowance if they would do extras over and above what they are responsible for. Such as making sure the plants are watered, helping put up the food in the refrig.. Making sure the clothes are sorted so I can wash them etc.

I feel that my children should do regular chores because we are a family and we help each other out because we love and respect each other. I am not their employer to pay them everytime they pick up their clothes which by the way was put in the floor by them. I also feel that as they grow older they need to help more around the house without having to be told. Dishes will be their chores as well in the future. I am at this time showing them how to cook, you know mixing up and such but not around the stove yet. This is a way of bonding as well as teaching math in using measuring cups ect.

My children allways have what they need and some of what they want within reason. I don't think parents should buy items that are so outragouse in price just because JR wants it. If he wants it bad enough he will work for the money and get it. My older two were raised that way and now they have a great sence of responsibility. In fact I was just at my older sons house which he is buying and was so proud of him. He keeps a very clean house (better than I do) even though he's no longer married. He has money in the bank and has lots of items he has paid cash for. But most of all he has a very good head on his shoulders and knows the value of money. He's had to work for everything he has and he appriciates it much more than if it was given to him. My other one still needs to grow up some but he is doing very well. I have ask them if there was anything they would change and they have both said maybe more family time. ( I had to work some of the time they were at home).

I think I can meet my maker and know I have done my best.
