The Bottom Line With child life jackets check for re cross approval, ask a life guard if your unsure. and never use water wings!

I am an experienced life guard and over the years I have noticed several things that parents do to cause accidents around pools. All of these things are very much proventable and if done right can help to save a child's life.

First there is the issue of life jackets. Most parents don't know which kind to use or how long to use them. First, don't use any kind of flotation device that does not clearly say " Red Cross Approved" some where on the box, and garment.

Second, know your garments. Two of the most dangerous flotation devices are water wings and back floats. water wings can slip off leaving a child holding on to them while their heads are below the water. The second is the back float. These are large pieces of foam that strap to the child's back. What can happen with these floats is that they flip to the surface leaving the child face down in the water. Over all I would recommend that if any parents have small children they should stay with them at all times when in a vest and always ask a lifeguard which ones are best.
