Instilling Family Values During The Holiday SeasonNov 22 '00 Write an essay on this topic. The holiday season is upon us and I thought this would be a good time to share ways in which family values can be incorporated during the holiday season. It is so important to teach our children to remember those that are less fortunate than ourselves. I strongly urge every parent to actively demonstrate this to their children by choosing some charitable method of giving to those that are less fortunate. This can be done with a donation of gifts, money or possibly the most valuable commodity, time. Some examples of this could be: choosing a needy family to adopt for the holidays; collecting warm clothing or socks for the homeless; organizing a food drive for a local food bank or other charitable organization; serving at a soup kitchen; or simply visiting the elderly at a local rest home. By seeing those that are less fortunate, it makes us appreciate everything that we do have. We teach our daughter that there is so much more to the holidays than just gifts; we teach her that the reason for the season is Jesus. Even at the young age of three, there are ways to teach our child what we’re truly celebrating. To do this, we make a small cake for Christmas and sing Happy Birthday to Jesus. This sets the scene for a family discussion about Jesus and that by celebrating Christmas; we are really celebrating his humble birth. Another strong value to teach children during the holiday season is the value of thoughtfulness. I would so much rather receive a present that reflects that some time was put into choosing the gift. Particularly with younger children, I would recommend encouraging them to give handmade gifts—perhaps a drawing, painting, craft or even a simple homemade card. I’m almost 24 years old, but my mom still has most of the little Christmas crafts that I made in nursery school. The time and love put into those crafts is much more valuable than anything money can buy. Most importantly, I think it’s important to take time out of your busy schedule to enjoy the beauty of the holiday season with your family. This alone will demonstrate to children the love that exists within a family. Don’t get so caught up in the hustle and bustle of the season that you forget to stop and enjoy it all. |
