We Always Remember the "Firsts"

Just a few thoughts:

. . . And We Need to Let Go of the "Lasts"

I was going through my kids clothes again the other day. Getting ready for winter. Deciding which clothes were too small for the older child, yet too big for the younger and which could now be passed on. This is always a difficult time for me. A time when I'm confronted with the fact that my kids are growing up - FAST! It's not as difficult for me as it used to be when they were babies, but it's still tough sometimes.

It's hard for me to let go of that baby... toddler... little boy. But I started thinking, I need to welcome this new "big boy" and young man with open arms. I also started wondering, when was the last time he wore THAT shirt? The special one I bought him that he loved so much with the (Bugs Bunny, Mickey Mouse, etc., etc.) on it.

We always remember the "firsts"
Baby's first smile, first laugh, first coo... toddlers first steps, first sentence, first "work of art". Our child's first day of school, first lost tooth. We always remember these things. They are our rites of passage. Some of us even record these events on film, or in writing. But have you ever thought about the "lasts"?

The LAST time baby crawls and decides from this moment forth - only to cruise or walk. The LAST time a toddler says "bee-nam-a" instead of "banana". The LAST day our child never heard a curse word. The last time he or she writes "s" backwards.

Probably the ONLY "last" that parents remember is that LAST diaper! When you finally decide not to spend any more money, time or effort on diaper changes - this kid is GOING to use the potty!

I'd just like to take a moment now to remember the "lasts". To celebrate them and to mourn them.

We don't commemorate the "lasts", we don't take pictures of them, we don't write them down - we don't even know they're happening.
