YOU WON'T BE ABLE TO
Jul 23 '00
When I got pregnant with my first child the first first thing my mother said to me was "You won't be able to". I asked her to elaborate on what "You won't be able to" meant. My mom told me that she was not able to breast feed my older sister or me, so in all likelihood I would not be able to do it either. I didn't understand her rationale and she did not have any other facts as to why I wouldn't be able to breast feed other than the reason that she couldn't do it.
Throughout my pregnancy, I heard continuously from my mother about the difficulties of breast feeding. Then my husband's mother started in on me. She told me breast feeding was for "poor people". She told me that formula was the way to go for a healthy happy child. I was really getting worried I wouldn't be able to breast feed my child. I had a couple of other people advise me that breast feeding wasn't the way to go.
When my daughter was born I tried to breast feed her, I wanted to breast feed. I was shocked! It was easier than I was told, my daughter gained weight, was healthy, and we were able to form a special bond. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Yes, there were times when it was difficult. I wanted to give my husband a set of breasts at night and wake him up to feed my daughter. Sometimes I wanted to be able to go out for longer than two hours before I had to return to breast feed my daughter. I didn't enjoy breast pumps and that got old. However, the breast pumps that are on the market to day are far more superior and are manufactured with ease of use and tenderness in mind.
I would highly recommend to anyone who can breast feed, that they do it. As I look back I noticed that everyone who was against breast feeding was either unable to do it or didn't do it. Most of my family and friends who have done it highly recommend it. It was a wonderful experience that brought my daughters closer to me.
