How I built my own small aquarium without spending a lot!

When I came home from Walmart I did not think much about putting one of my new Bettas into a 1 gal. tank and the other in my "Betta" tank which I only use when I am cleaning the larger tanks or for travel but the Betta that I put in there DID NOT LIKE IT.
Currently this Betta's nicknames are Lil' Dragon after my larger Betta Dragon and Timid due to his timid nature. Well this Timid lil' Dragon would get so terrified of me trying to feed him or even move my hand close to him that he would hit the side of the tiny betta tank so hard he stunned himself...
Well this did not make me happy and neither did it do much good for Timid.
So the next day I went to the local dollar store and bought a small Sterilite brand 4 quart shoebox style plastic container with a rubbermade like lid.
Here are some things which made this ideal. One was the cost. Another was that it was clear with a white top (they also had green but I opted for a light color) It was not too deep but still big enough to allow the fish room to swim and when he wants to Flee from my hands without knocking himself silly.
I prepared this container by first washing it with distilled water, then I put a layer of glass marbles which were prewashed with distilled water. You can use aquarium gravel if you like but I was going for as cheap as possible without sacrificing the comfort of the fish.
Total cost with Marbles: $2
Without marbles (in case you have some already): $1
Not only is this a more cost effective method of keeping a Betta but it would also make a great project for both kids and adults. I have added a small airstone with hose hooked to an aquarium air pump. this is optional if your using a betta but I have it on for a little while to airate the water and to give him some exercise by swimming against the current.
