"Don't leave home without it!"

Oct 24 '00

Sitters and day care providers need your child's important information at their fingertips if ever an emergency should arise. Here's a sure fire way to enable them to take action fast!

On a 5-by-7 notecard, clearly write your name, your spouse's name, and all of your important phone numbers (home, work, cell phones, beeper, doctor, dentist, poison control, hospital, etc.), then laminate the card. Punch a hole in one corner of the card, pull a thick string through it, then attach it to the handle of your child's diaper bag or backpack.

Inside the same bag, along with the regular assortment of diapering items, include a small, baby-proof first aid kit that includes a bottle of syrup of ipecac, adhesive strips, and a thermometer. Always leave the bag at the child's day care and at home with your sitter.

Another good idea for stroller trips is to attach a small, zippered bag to the handle. I take this with me for walks or runs with my small children. Inside I have first aid cream, bandages, antiseptic wipes (although a small, damp washcloth inside a ziploc bag is sufficient for wiping scrapes.) This small necessity has been a life saver for those occasional "owies", where a band-aid was a must have in order to get back home without an all out riot!
