Breast is Best
Dec 01 '99
I am on my second baby. He was born just recently (I need to brag!), on October 27th. He was the second most perfect baby I have ever seen! (Counting my precious 3 year old!)
I had decided while I was growing up that I was going to breastfeed my children. My mom grew up in the era that bottle was best, because, perhaps to them at the time, nursing probably seemed too inhuman. I got this inspiration from myself alone because, as a teenager, I had already known the benefits. I did not care about how it would affect my breast shape, but did you know that pregnancy ALONE does that? Nursing has helped me ALWAYS get my pretty figure back!
Upon studying about the benefits of breastfeeding, I was ever determined to nurse my first (and others to come) child, NO MATTER WHAT. Yes, for a first time mother it can be a little confusing and painful, perhaps even daunting. Confusing because, despite studying, it does not make one an expert! I wasn't sure what to do when I was engorged to where it was too painful to move... Or how to know how to control keeping my breasts the same size. I need to be honest here, I was definitely AND constantly tripping over myself ( not literally! :D )and getting frustrated. But because I knew the benefits it was giving to my little girl at that time, I was determined to continue.
It scared me to the point that I cried hard (and prayed), that it was just too painful to do! But I did not give up. My baby will be as healthy as ever if I just sacrificed my own comforts for an excellent "borrowed" immune system, less colicky (which I know she would have hated to be), have healthier teeth and bones while growing. Not only does this benefit her, but it still benefited me! We grew closer and I always enjoyed holding her. It also lowers the risk of breast cancer. Can you believe that! That is like a dozen pluses for me! Also, it helps lose the flabby little tummy after giving birth. (Who doesn't want to lose THAT??!) Plus, imagine all the money you would save from buying formula?
Just imagine: Holding your newborn close to your bare skin, she looks up into your eyes as you get that warm fuzzy feeling all over (and it is a tangible feeling that comes with breastfeeding.)
I am just so glad that I stuck to it the first time because it is so much easier the second time. All over again, am I enjoying the wonderful opportunities that this natural phenomenon has to offer a single person!
Imagine the swelling pride when you see your cutie baby "plumping" up from YOUR own milk? I promise you, you will love ALL the results.
