So Many Children

So Many Children

I am writing this to make everyone aware of the need for adoptive homes in New York State. New York State Department of Social Services has many children available for adoption. Many of these children are forgotten about due to their ages, race or special needs. I am a certified foster parent of a 17-year-old Hispanic male who has been in my care for over 3 years. I have been certified for over 6 years and have seen many children come and go.

Before my 4-year-old was born, I was a caseworker in the adoption and foster care field for the period of 10 years. I was amazed to see the amount of children that came through the foster care system only to become eligible for adoption. These children never returned home to their natural parents or a family member. I have gazed through the NYS adoption blue books, which contain hundreds, if not thousands of children available for adoption.

While I was a caseworker I could not even begin to tell you how many times adoptive families would request a “perfect” child under the age of 2, white with no medical, emotional or physical problems. I am sorry to say, but these families probably still remain on the available list today. It seems that wanting this Perfect child is so far out of reach for them. What about the not so perfect child? Don’t they deserve a chance? People tend to forget about the so many children needing a home. What about the stone faced 3 year old wanting a mommy or the drug addicted infant who cries out in pain from withdrawal, the neglected 12 year old wanting a home or the abandoned 17 year old needing to be loved and guided. These children need someone who care and somewhere to call home. I have so many times looked into the eyes of these children seeing the pain of not being accepted or loved. Look into your hearts, these children are calling out all over this great country called America. Give them the freedom they deserve. Offer them a space in your heart and home. The journey will be difficult, but being a parent to any child can be difficult. The rewards are endless.
Remember LOVE conquers all.
