HE IS YOUR "X" NOT MINE

My sister divorced from her husband about five years ago. They were married fifteen years. They appeared to have a solid marriage, but evidently there were problems behind closed doors. They have two sons. My sister left her husband, and they divorced shortly after.
We all love Russell. He became such an important part of our family. When they divorced it broke my heart. My sister communicates with him, because of her teenage sons and she says they are still friends. We don’t invite him to family functions at her request. We all miss him very much.
They have both moved on to relationships with other people. Russell and his wife to be, invited my brothers, their families, my husband, and myself, to his wedding. We all felt very honored to be invited. We all went to the wedding, and we were warmly greeted by his family and his new wife. She is a lovely person and we like her. She told me that she knows how much Russell misses being around us. I told her that they were always welcome in our home.
The really sad thing is that my sister is mad at us for going to his wedding. She sees it as a disloyalty to her. I love my sister with all my heart, but I think she is wrong in this situation. She divorced him, we didn’t. There is enough love, for her, and his new family. I will still respect her wish, to not invite him to family functions, but we will continue to communicate with him on our own terms. I think she still has feelings for him, that she won’t admit it to herself. Divorce is such an ugly thing, but sometimes is necessary, and most of the time turns out for the best. I know my sister, will get over being mad at us, and hopefully she will be able to deal with our love for her “X
