Tales of the Cloth Diaper

Jun 02 '00

I was young when I gave birth to my first two children. Young, by my standards, was 21 and 22 years of age when my daughters were born. I figured that disposable diapers was the only way to go. My girls had their fair share of diaper rashes, some serious enough to warrant trips to the hospital emergency room. By the time I gave birth to my son, I was the ripe old age of 27. I had been told by my mother and other "older" women, that cloth diapers protected a baby from frequent diaper rashes.

As one of my baby shower gifts, my best girlfriend gave me a wonderful gift of six weeks in a cloth diapering service! I must say, this was by far, the greatest thing that any one could have given me. I can honestly say, that if I had another baby today, I would definitely go this route again. But, since I am now a grandmother, the chances of that happening are slim to none!

There are several reasons why I feel so strongly about using the cloth diapers. First, and most importantly, my son did not have a diaper rash the entire six weeks that he was on cloth diapers. He was born eight weeks premature and was tiny to say the least. Even the preemie pampers were too large for his doll like frame. The cloth diapers were much easier to fit him. There was no leakage and I did not have the worry of the adhesive strips not adhering if powder or baby oil got on them.

I believe that the cloth diapers offer something that disposable diapers never will. The cotton that the cloth diapers is made of allows the baby's sensitive hind parts to breathe. The disposable diapers, at least back in 1987, held so much heat and moisture, a perfect breeding ground for bacteria and germs, that diaper rashes were inevitable.

When the six week cloth diapering service ended, I started using Pampers, then Luvs, then Huggies. My son had severe diaper rashes with all of these brand name products. I had tried frequent diaper changes, zinc ointments, and assorted baby powders containing corn starch. All to no avail.

I must add, that there is a possibility that my son had an allergic reaction to the disposable diapers. I will also admit that disposable diapers made today are manufactured differently than many years ago. They seem to offer more protection for the baby's sensitive skin.

It is my strong feeling, however, that cloth diapers do offer greater protection for the baby against many germs and bacteria. In my experience with them, diaper rash was not an issue with my baby until disposable diapers entered the picture.

The choice is a very personal one. Therefore, I highly recommend that you try cloth diapers before you completely dismiss the idea.
