Plan a Creative Childs Summer Birthday

Jun 13 '00

For the first time in 6 years, I didn't plan a HUGE birthday party for our kids. This year I decided to take a rest and let my creative juices start flowing again. It is my second son's 5th birthday, and of course I am already starting to plan his birthday party for next year. Here's my idea.

My kids absolutely love camping, but this is a spin on a traditional sleep over.

THE FAKE SLEEPOVER

I think this party would work best at dusk

The scene
Set up tents and screen houses (borrow some from your neighbors - or rent them if you have to) in the backyard.

The food
A Wenie Roast
If the kids are old enough, give them all long sticks and let them roast their hotdogs over the bar-b-que or a small, of course supervised, bon fire.

Smores
These are made very easily by putting marshmellos and chocolate chips in the toaster oven . .heating on 350 until golden brown and then sandwiching between graham crackers. If the hot dog roast went well, the kids can toast their own marshmellos, too.

Hamburger Cookies
Take two vanilla wafers (the hamburger bun), place a chocolate one in the middle (thats the hamburger)dribble a bit of green (lettuce) and red (ketchup) out of the sides of the cookie sandwich, wet the top slightly and add sesame seeds.

Bug Juice
Kool-Aid with special ice cubes. Go to the dollar or party store and purchase a cheap bag of bugs. Freeze them in the ice cubes and float one in each drink.

The cake
It's called the sleepover cake. I wish I could take credit for it, but its been seen many places. Make a regular, 8 by 11 cake. Turn the cake out of the pan. Cut twinkies in half lengthwise and put them on top of the cake. Flatten marshmellos for pillows and place above each twinkie. Add a vanilla wafer for the face and decorate. Ice the sleeping bags (the twinkies) with one solid color across the whole bottom part of the cake (its easier this way) Be creative and use gel icing, mini jaw breakers, shoe string licorish and other candies to finish the cake.

The Goodie Bag
A flashlight, of course. A book about Ghost Stories or Survival Stories, a small bottle of sun-screen, and bug repellent.

The Games
Flashlight Tag
I think every kid loves this game. Since they all got a flashlight (you can get these at the dollar store or at Oriental Trading Co (www.otc.com) very cheap.

Crafts
Let each kid decorate a tee shirt or small duffle bag (I can usually find these for under 3$ at my local craft store. It will be a reminder of your childs birthday for years to come.

A Treasure Hunt
Break the group up into groups. Write a list of things (ie: a leaf, a dandelion, a clover, etc) for each team to find.

As the year goes on, I'll of course come up with more ideas for this party to add on. Some will be outrageous and I'll never have the time of money to do them, but others will be in the scope of the budget.
