Start Putting Parents in Jail!

Jun 07 '00

Yes, you read right! Put the parents of children who commit crimes in jail. If a child brings a gun or drugs to school, starts a fire, commits larceny, etc., arrest the child's parents. My husband and I both believe that if law enforcement started making childrens' parents responsible for their kids' actions, there would be less violent acts against other children. It would also make parents more active in their childrens' lives.

Okay, so maybe jail time is a bit harsh? So, fine them! Charge the parents with something. How else did these children learn that it is okay to bring a gun to school? Watching violent television? Hmmm...maybe if the parents supervised what their children watched. Their peers? I know when I was a kid, my parents would not let me out of the house with some strange kid unless they knew the child's parents and spent some time with the child. The community should not have to pay for lazy or inept parents. It's our children at stake here.

I know I had seen some silly talk show a few months ago about out of control teens. In the town that one of the families lived in, the parent would be arrested if their child missed "X" amount of days. I think that this type of law needs to be applied to all other aspects of juvenile deliquency.

There were just two incidents yesterday that happened in our area. One was a 12 year old boy brought a 9mm pistol to school, unloaded, but he had a bullet in his pocket. He also had a bag of marijuana on him. The other incident that happened was a boy shot another boy in the eye with his BB gun! By the way, here in Virginia, there is no age limits/requirements at all to buy a BB gun!! I was just in Walmart the other day, going down one of the toy aisles, and there were BB guns right there. I think that needs to be changed. I am not a gun control advocate, nor am I a member of the NRA. Both of these boys were arrested.

These two incidents are what prompted my husband and I to discuss this issue. He was the one who originally suggested putting the parents in jail. I have now written an epinion on it and am hoping to bring this view to a lot of people. If a parent is least of all threatened with having to pay a fine, I think that there would be less juvenile crime.
