HomeKids & FamilyLocks & GuardsWhat Should I Know About Adoption?

Thank you birth mom!

Oct 02 '00

I am an adult adoptee. I was adopted at the age of 2 months in 1969. The couple who adopted me were unable to have children after trying for seven years. They adopted two other babies before I came along.
My adoptive mother (who I refer to as my real mother) is a teacher. It was always important to her that all three of us new how our family came to be. I never remember a time that I did not know that I was adopted. We each had our own adoption stories about the day they came to pick us up and hold us for the first time.
I do not have any information regarding my biological parents. There is always curiosity about the unknown. Do I have her eyes, his mouth, was she short, did she like music too. These are minor things that I can live without the knowledge of. Therefore, I really have no desire to find my biological parents. If the opportunity ever arose, my real mother would support me in every way. In fact, we would both like an opportunity to say thank you. Thank you for loving me enough to let me go. Thank you for allowing my parents the chance to raise a child they would never have had if it weren't for your unselfish act. I believe that placing a child up for adoption is the most unselfish act that any person can make.
I have a wonderful family and have had all of the advantages a parent would want for a child. It has not always been easy being raised with two other very different adoptees. We managed to make it work and are an extremely close family.
My sister became pregnant at the age of 16 and gave her child up for adoption. My family has experienced both sides of the adoption process. We took from the system and also gave back because we strongly believe that adoption works. It is not the easy solution, but it is always the most humane, courageous, and unselfish act.
I hope that more people who are considering either giving a child up for adoption or couples considering adopting one will take the time to research their options and ignore some of the horror stories we see on T.V. each week.
