I have yet to see a La Leche League member kill.

Feb 27 '00

If I had a dime for every time I heard a tale of La Leche League
members being Nazis, I'd be rich. For anyone to compare a non-profit organization that offers FREE mother-to-mother support to "a member of a German fascist party controlling Germany from 1933 to 1945 under Adolf Hitler" as defined in the dictionary is obscene. Nazis killed, La Leche League is a well known, respected authority on breastfeeding.

La Leche League is not a cult. Members are mothers who wish to support or seek advice from other breastfeeding mothers. Some leaders may visit you in the hospital AT YOUR REQUEST. Most hospitals have tight security, the public can't just wander in and out of the maternity ward. I'm not sure if some confuse the LC (lactation consultant) with LLL (La Leche League) in these stories of hospital encounters, but even so...

La Leche League has members all over the world. Let's say that a mother claiming to be a member did approach you, against your wishes. That is not something the organization advocates, call LLLI. Members are not paid, many have several children, who has time to lurk in hospitals?

There is no debate over the fact that breastfeeding is best. I am grateful there is a supportive organization with the most accurate information available to me. The reputation that non-members give the group does a disservice to mothers everywhere.

LLLI is pro-breastfeeding, not anti-formula. When they advise not introducing a bottle, they do so to help avoid nipple confusion and to avoid decreasing milk supply. It will not help a breastfeeding relationship to interfere with supply, to introduce artificial nipples or to not have a support system available.

If you encounter an individual who is not helpful, they are but one of thousands of other mothers who might have a better approach. If you aren't interested in breastfeeding help, you simply do not contact LLL.

If you are interested in nursing, LLL is a valuable resource to answer questions, offer support and help overcome difficulties. The leaders are
doing this as a service, they are not paid for their training, time and effort. I did not care for the atmosphere of a local group, so I tried another. I've made friends and helped others with my support, experiences and advice.

La Leche League has nothing to gain by you breastfeeding. Quite the opposite, the individuals who profit from LLL are the mothers who receive support and the children who receive breastmilk.
