Ovarian Cyst's: Going into the unknown
Sep 30 '00
This review is part three of my Ovarian Cyst reviews. Since my first inner explosion of my first cyst, I have experienced a lot of pain of my right lower side. I went back to the doctor over and over again. I saw family practice doctors and gyn doctors and neither could tell me anything.
The gyn doc told me that I was fine. That I showed no symptoms of anything wrong. Basically what she was telling me is that the pain was all in my head. My regular doctor was at his wits end with me and he to didn't know what was wrong so he ordered a CT Scan. I have never had on of these and the thought of another IV scared me.
I have come to know that many people have never had a CT scan and had no clue how the process went. So I had to do some of my own research. I found that they make you drink some of the worst tasting stuff ever made. And they make you drink large quantities of it to. You also have to some how manage to digest a Fleet oral laxative to clean you out. For one day you forget all about your pain due to the disgust you experience from these drinks you have to digest!
You also can not eat or drink anything the evening before your scan until the scan is over. For me I could not eat or drink after 4:00 the day before. Right before dinner no doubt! The day of the scan they had me drink another glass of nasty drink and stuck me with an IV for the dye. This dye is clear and has some of the same stuff in it that fish have. So if you are allergic to fish then you may have an allergic reaction to this dye.
The scan itself only took about 15 minutes and wasn't to bad. I was pleased when it was over, mainly because I wanted to empty my bladder and eat!!
Well, later that night the doctor called me to tell me that there was in fact another cyst on my right ovary. I was not too happy because he said it was rather large. He wanted me to go through another ultra sound for further study. If the cyst does not come out on it's own then they want to do a Laproscopy. This is where they insert the Laproscope into a slit above the abdomen. They can also remove the ovary if need be.
I am praying that it will come out on it's own. I have never had surgery like that before and it can cause major anxiety for the new comer. The main point of this review to let all women know of the warning signs for cysts. Some can be cancerous and most are not. But we should all be made aware of them.
The main warning signs are:
Missed periods or bleeding in between periods.
Pain, bloating, pressure on the abdomen.
Increases body hair growth like legs & face.
Constipation and difficulty urinating.
Painful Intercourse.
Weight Loss from decreased appetite or weight gain from bloating.
Painful menstruation.
Many women have had cysts in their life but did not know it. Most of the time they pass with your monthly cycles. If they do not pass they can grow large and burst. If this happens you can experience major pain and discomfort. If you develop a fever, nausea or vomiting, bleeding with the burst then you need to contact your doctor as soon as possible because you can get an infection.
Some doctors will recommend taking the birth control pill to prevent and get rid of ovarian cysts. The pill shrinks the cyst so you pass it when you have your cycle. Once again if the cyst does not pass on it's own and does not burst then you can look at having surgery, which could involve the removal of the ovary and cyst all the way up to a complete hysterectomy.
So please, know your warning signs! If you suspect a cyst then call your OB and have them do an ultra sound. Do what you can to get rid of these cysts because believe me, you do not want them to burst!
