| iowamommy's Full Review: Baby Bjorn Original |
I was hesitant to purchase this item because I had another brand of carrier in the past that was a nightmare to use. The other one came with a video showing how to put baby in and put it on, but it was a half-an-hour procedure to figure it out and have somebody help you into it. I finally gave up on it and never used it more than about three times!
I heard a lot of good things about the Baby Bjorn, so I decided to give it a shot, figuring all those mothers couldn't be wrong!
I found a great deal online and was able to buy this for only $48, and usually they range between $70 and $80.
This is very easy to use! It's not complicated at all. There are even instructions inside the carrier on a label in case you have trouble and don't know where the regular instructions are. You can use it as soon as your baby is 8 pounds and 21 inches long. When they are so tiny, up to about 2 months, there are additional leg straps to secure so they can't slip through the openings.
The head support is great. So firm and protective, they are cradled in there well. Hannah usually drifts off when she is in this. When they are older babies, you can turn them around to face the world and see what is going on. The part that supported their head before then is turned down so they can see out.
This is a nice item to have when you have other kids, particularly toddlers that you have to chase. In places where a stroller isn't handy, it's a lifesaver. The true test of this came a few weeks ago. We took all four kids to Chuck E. Cheese (crazy, I know...) and I brought this with. With a two year old to chase, I needed a way to get around without carrying Hannah in my arms or car seat, that gets too heavy. Those places are so crowded, so I knew the stroller was out. So, I strapped this on and give it a try.
It was perfect! I was able to chase the two year old, wind my way through the crowd with ease, and even play a few games of skee ball with her attached. I had one admiring mother with a newborn there asking me where in the world I found it and she wanted one, too.
I plan to use this as long as baby and I are both comfortable with it. You can get a few more things done around the house when you need to, but I wouldn't cook with it or do any dangerous activities. You have to be careful, of course, when bending over, etc. Bend from your knees, not your waist. You don't want to do any activities that will bounce them around excessively (like jogging!) but it's great for going on a walk.
Update: The time came to sell my carrier and I listed it on Ebay. I did very well! The carrier sold for $64.00, and I only paid $48.00 for it! It was in great shape, so that helped. Keep the resale value in mind when buying one. Also, consider buying one on Ebay. You may find just the right deal on a gently used one and save some money. Just remember to make sure that it is the new version instead of the one involved in the leg strap recall!
