OUR GIRLS

May 08 '00

Many years ago, when I was first married, I told my husband that I would like a dozen children! He thought that it was a bit much, but didn't say too much. After being married for 8 years and still no children, I was a basket case. I would cry when I'd see young mothers with their babies. My friends were all having babies too.

We visited specialists to see what our problem was. After many tests, the doctor told me that my tubes were closed...... and that he thought that it would be better for us to adopt than to take a 50-50 chance of an operation to open my tubes. I had had rheumatic fever as a child and I have a heart murmur, so he didn't think that it was a good idea to carry a child in my condition.

We visited an adoption agency and after 8 months of waiting, we had a beautiful baby girl. Fifteen months later we adopted a second beautiful baby girl. So instead of a family of 12 children, I settled for a family of 2 children. They are now married and we have 5 grandchildren.

I've always told our girls that their moms could not take care of them but loved them so much that they gave them up for adoption so that we could be their parents. I'm so thankful that the young mothers carried their babies to full term rather than have an abortion.
