Shake, Rattle and Roll...

Nov 13 '00

I would have to say the absolute best toys for infants are rattles. My son has had many rattles ever since he was born. He really did not interest in them much though until he was a couple months old and even now at ten months he still loves them.

He has several rattles in his arsenal and I have not noticed one more favored than the other.

He has one rattle with Tweety Bird sitting on top of the ring that makes the handle. Just today we were in the truck and Dad ran into the store to get some things while I watched our son.

I fished the Tweety rattle out of the diaper bag to give to him. He kept turning it over and over in his hands and when the Tweety face was facing him he would smile at it. It kept him happy and seeing him smile made me happy.

He also loves this other rattle that has a big hollow clear plastic container on it. The container is flat and round and has six colored rings inside that move all around when he shakes it. I do worry if it broke and he somehow got hold of the rings but it has held up great.

Another rattle he has is made up of four circles and in each circle is a two colored ball that will spin. It also rattles when you shake it but he loves to sit with it and just spin the balls around. This one can keep him entertained for hours. I sometimes end up jealous with this one as I can't even get his attention away from it. <smile>

He has another that is a hammer rattle and is two colors. He loves this one and seems to know already that you are supposed to hit things with it. I will have to teach him later what is appropriate to hit with a hammer but for now he hits his toys with it. He loves the bang made from plastic hitting plastic. I don't worry about this one breaking as it seems to be very thick plastic. It would crack before it broke.

For us the absolute best generic baby toy that has many different shapes, sizes, sounds and colors has been the rattle hands down. I would recommend to every parent to invest in several different rattles for your babies. They are not very expensive. Mine ranged from 1 to 3 dollars depending on who made them and how big or intricate they were.

I would use caution though when selecting a rattle because should it break your child may eat what is inside that makes it rattle. I used the tap test. If it sounded too hollow then I felt that the plastic was not thick enough and chose to put that one back and select another.

Happy Rattling!!
