| elderberries's Full Review: Baby Bjorn Original |
Simply put, I adore my baby. I love feeling him next to me, and I love knowing he’s safe and warm and happy. After hearing so many good things about carriers and slings, I registered for the Nojo Babysling. After my son Daniel was born, I was disappointed to discover that he loathed the sling. When I put him in it, you would have thought I was killing him, the way he screamed! Needless to say, I put the sling aside.
I had heard a lot of good things about Snuglis and the Baby Bjorn, and so I decided to give it a try. I had been told by reliable friends that the Baby Bjorn was the the way to go, but after spending so much on all the other new baby equipment, I was hesitant to put down another $75 on a carrier that he might hate as much as the sling.
I thought I had found a solution when I found a used Snugli (the Evenflo soft front carrier) at a kids resale shop for $14. I bought it and was thrilled to find that Daniel loved it! Unfortunately, my search was not destined to end here, because a plastic clip on the Snugli broke two days later.
So now that I knew how much he liked the carrier, I was ready to buy a new one, but I wasn’t about to buy another Snugli once I discovered that all of the Evenflo soft carriers (including their top-of-the-line $60 model) used those same plastic clips. The choice at this point was easy, since I’d heard so much positive feedback about the Baby Bjorn. Comparing it in the store to the other models (including the Snuglis and other brands), it looked to be better made. The buckles were larger and thicker. The straps were much wider and sturdier. The Baby Bjorn uses metal snaps on the side instead of plastic clips. So I bought it and hoped for the best.
What I got was indeed the best! After figuring out how to put it on, I was hooked (no pun intended). It’s a little confusing at first, but the directions are clear, including pictures to explain each step, and it quickly became second nature. It’s also very adjustable, both for the wearer and the baby. The straps that go across the back can be taken in or let out considerably, so both I and my husband can wear it comfortably. As for the baby, there is a sliding buckle at the bottom that will let out to allow for the baby’s increase in length as he grows. There’s also 2 sets of snaps at the top so you can decide how close the baby’s head stays to your chest when he’s facing you (so a newborn’s head doesn’t go flopping around). Once the baby's head is more sturdy, you can turn him around and face him outward, folding down the front flap so the baby's face isn't obscured. The Baby Bjorn is not meant to be worn as a back carrier.
Another plus for the Baby Bjorn is that you can lay the baby down without waking him up! If Daniel has fallen asleep in the carrier, I go to his changing table or bassinet and lean over it, laying him down on his back while still in the carrier. Then, before I straighten up, I unfasten the sides, so when I stand up, he stays asleep. Then I just slide the front flap of the carrier out from under him, and voila! Still sleeping baby.
I also love the fact that it’s attractive and tasteful. The dark navy blue and red plaid trim doesn’t clash with my outfits and looks good both on me and my husband. One of my complaints about many other carriers stems from the overabundance of pink bunnies, yellow moons, blue cows, and just about every other cheesy baby pattern around. My way of thinking is this: my baby likes these colors, so my house is covered with them. Why do I have to be covered with them too? Daniel’s not looking at the carrier while he’s in it; he’s looking at everything else (or straight at my chest, depending on which way he’s facing). I have included in my epinions public profile a small picture of me with Daniel in the Baby Bjorn for anyone interested, at:

Overall, I’m thrilled with my purchase. $75 is a lot of money, but for a piece of equipment that can be used at home doing housework, outside taking a walk, or even grocery shopping while keeping baby happy, safe, and quiet... it’s worth it!
