I was lured into the cult of the cloth!

I really don't know what 'turned me on' to cloth diapers. I think I may just be really impressionable or something. You see, I have three children, all of which have used disposables.
With my first baby, I took the advice of my mother and decided to use cloth diapers. We purchased dozens of flat fold diapers and I learned the art of folding diapers. Things went ok for a while, but then she developed the WORST rash I had ever seen in my life. It peeled and bled and was just an awful sight to behold. It could have been my washing technique, or it could simply be that she has extra sensitive skin. Whatever the real cause was, I blamed it on the cloth diapers and switched to disposables. In time, the rash cleared up and I swore that a cloth diaper would never touch one of my children ever again.
Along came baby number two. Cloth never once crossed my mind with him. I am sure I paid college tuition for one of Proctor and Gamble executive's children with all I spent on diapers over the next 3 years. They were convenient. They were also messy. My son had a peculiar way of always ripping the back end of his diapers and leaving a trail of gel beads. I call them gel beads rather than admit that it was actually a urine soaked chemical trail he was leaving behind him. It was always a joy to clean that up. UGH!
Along came baby number three. Still not giving cloth a second thought, I stocked up on Pampers for my new bundle of joy. Since I was breastfeeding this time around, we went through ALOT of Pampers. I had been browsing message boards and heard a few women talking about cloth diapers. I was intrigued that someone could actually ENJOY cloth diapers. Visions of red, peeling baby butts went through my mind. Surely all these women weren't subjecting their babies to that! I read further. I began talking to a mother that used cloth diapers and was convinced that I too, could use cloth diapers. So when my son was 4 months old, I bought a few dozen of the Gerber Diaper Service diapers and some pull on pants. I was hooked! My son seemed to like the feel of the cotton. I could have been imagining this, but wouldn't YOU prefer cotton to paper?
My friends thought I went off the deep end. I have never been known to stay on top of my laundry, and adding diapers to it must have looked insane to those who knew me well. While laundry is still not my forte, diapers are always washed and ready to go. The money I have saved by using cloth is amazing. It is also nice not to be on the last few diapers and several days away from payday and wondering just what we will use to cover Jr.s bottom until then.
There are really nice cloth diapers on the market today from which mothers can choose. We still use just the old fashioned prefold diapers with pins and pull on pants. I urge all new moms to give cloth a try. You will save a ton of money and your children can make their mark on the world in another way other than a few acres in a landfill.
