Breast or Bottle? A Dad's Opinion
May 19 '00 (Updated May 21 '00)
My wife thought this topic could use a man's opinion so here goes.
I am an only child and I didn't watch a lot of babies grow up. So, when the question of whether or not to breastfeed came up, I let my wife make the decision mostly. I had heard that breast feeding was the best choice and I figured that what was the best choice should be the choice for our son. So, I was glad when my wife decided to breastfeed.
My wife has been breastfeeding our son for 10 Months now and I have to admit it has been hard on her. She never gets to go anywhere by herself for more than an hour at a time. Our son starts to get upset after she is gone for a while. She had a really hard time in the beginning because he did not latch on properly. Also, she was very tired all the time because, let's face it, it is easier to give a ready made bottle to a baby in the middle of the night than try to stay up and breastfeed.
However, most of our friends and family bottlefed(feed) their children and in my opinion breastfeeding is best. All of the kids we know that are bottlefed spit up all the time. Our son rarely if ever spit up. My wife tells me this is because breastmilk is easier to digest. The kids that are bottle fed seemed to be sick all of the time. My niece is 4 days younger than our son and has been to the doctors at least twice a month since she was born with all kinds of stomach problems, ear infections, ect. I'm not sure if she was breastfed it would have helped but I'm sure the antibodies in breastmilk would have made it a little better. My cousin's son is the same way.
I'm not saying that breast is the choice everybody should make. (I'll leave it to my wife to preach that to you.) I am saying however, that in my opinion, (That's all this is is my opinion.) breast is the best choice. At least for my son it is.
