You Need To Do What Works For YOU - Combatting Morning Sickness ...
Feb 10 '00 (Updated Aug 26 '01)
The Bottom Line Try some common suggestions from those who have been there.
When pregnant with my first child, Colin, I had morning sickness, but thankfully rarely vomited ... mostly my stomach just churned all day long. It started at about 6 weeks and it went away about the 4th month. I learned to do what worked for me quickly, although I did listen to a lot of advice and ideas. I did listen to everyone's (friends, family, doctor, nurses) opinions, and if they sounded reasonable and not too expensive, I tried them. I, in part, learned to listen to my body, and if the idea of eating it made me stomach churn, I left it alone.
My biggest problem was getting up at 5:30 to shower and drive for 35 minutes to work each morning. The minute I would stand in the shower it would hit me, and I would stop at each phase of getting ready for work running to the bathroom "just in case." I planned my drive to work by convenience store bathrooms and their relationship to what I had to drive by.
Only 2 foods ever made me actually sick, beef tacos and pork. So (obviously) I did not eat them again. I actually felt worse smelling food cooking then I did eating it, so I learned not to leave my classroom while the cafeteria was doing the bulk of their cooking. I would only enter our kitchen/dining room to eat once the food was prepared and on the plate.
I had heard about Saltines, and to me, these were the most boring, bland things in the world to eat. Same with any type of cracker or drink.
So, what worked for me? Ginger snaps mostly. I also lived off of bananas and raisins. I had Snaps next to my bed, on the sink when I went into the shower, next to my curling iron, in a little sandwich baggie in the car, and in a cabinet in my classroom. My fertility nurse suggested them (something about the ginger), and I couldn't drink the ginger ale because the bubbles bothered me.
I found what works and I raided the supermarket shelves. And I got through it.
You will too.
