Soda Pop is not for children!!
Apr 10 '00
I have a 1 1/2 year old and I can honestly say he has never had a sip of soda. This has been hard work on my part and let me tell you why. My husband's family is a bunch of soda addict's. Every meal they have, there is at least one 2 liter of soda smack in the middle of the table. I don't have a problem with the adults drinking it because they are making the choice to rot their teeth but bot of my sisters-in-law's, give soda to their kids who are 2, 3 and 4 years old. And most of the time, they give it in baby bottles! The two and four yeard old haven't had major problems, other than a lot of cavaties but the 3 year old has already suffered from the affects of the sugar and acid in the soda. His two front teeth turned black and had to be pulled, this was also caused by the fact that he was given a bottle after the appropriate age. His mother can't afford to get the cosmetic dentistry to give him front teeth again, so he will remain toothless until his permanent teeth grow in. I feel really bad for all the children because they beg for the soda and unless they get it, they'll cry. I wish my in laws would have at the very least, given the soda in moderation. They hardly ever drink milk, seldom drink juice and NEVER drink water.
It's all very sad to watch but at the same time, it makes me more able to keep my baby away from soda. He likes to drink his milk and juice and water and I am very thankful that when he wakes up in the morning, his first words to me aren't "mommy...soda" like his cousins do. It's gonna be harder and harder to keep it away from him as he gets older but I think that as long as I keep him turned on to other ways of refreshment, I don't anticipate much of a problem.
The point of this article is, please don't give your babies soda. They have all of their lives to drink the stuff, it's not necessary to get them started at an early age. Introduce them to 100% fruit juice and, water and milk. My son likes his "bubbly juice" which is 100% fruit juice mixed with sparkling water. Same affect as soda, but not all the sugar and caffiene.
