Daddy am I Going to Die?

Apr 18 '00

If your child is well and asks if she's going to die, explain that everyone dies, but that most people don't die until they're very old. Find out why she's worried about dying and deal with her concern. Be alert for signs that she's feeling guilty about something she's done or thought about doing and is worrying that she'll die as a punishment.

If your child is sick but doesn't have a life-threatening illness, reassure her that the type of sickness she has doesn't kill people: "Honey, chicken pox is something lots of kids get, and adults too. It makes you feel pretty bad for a while, but it goes away in a week or so. You're going to be just fine."

Also, if your child needs to be hospitalized you might take her to visit the pediatric ward of the hospital before she's admitted. Check with your hospital to see if they have special preadmission visits for children. There are also a number of children's books that deal with topics of illness and hospitalization.
